MARY - THURSDAY, JUNE 19, 1947

I was having so much fun. My family was here, Ruby was everything I wanted to be, and we were having a social dinner which I hoped would happen more often. Their house was gorgeous. Why couldn’t we have a place like this? It wasn’t a mansion or covered in gold but each room had a distinct purpose. There was the sitting room, the living room, the bedroom for the adults, the bedroom for Ruby, the servant room, the lounge room, and the kitchen and bathrooms were so shiny. Marble, polished wood, no dust in sight.

Whereas we lived above our store. There wasn’t a lot of light that could come in, so the whole place had a grayness about it. We had a living room, kitchen, bathroom, and two bedrooms. Yes, Charlie and I had to share a bedroom. We didn’t have enough storage for our business supplies downstairs so it overflowed into our living room and bedrooms. The only place that specifically had its own purpose was the kitchen. That was Mama and Baba’s agreement that she would have that space to herself and no one would meddle with it. I had heard countless arguments where Mama wanted a bigger place and Baba said they didn’t have enough money. It was a constant battle. I was so embarrassed by our living situation that I never invited any friends over even though some had asked. One day I would have a place like this. Soft suede chairs that faced leather couches and glass tables. Art that hung on the wall that made you look cultured. Not a stain in sight. A grand staircase that spiraled up to the second floor. One day.

It was time to leave quicker than I would have liked. I watched my parents while they said their goodbyes. They seemed to have enjoyed the dinner. I think Charlie was the only one who seemed like he could have done without it. He needed to loosen up a bit.
